about main street ventures
"The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it's the
same problem you had last year."
-- John Foster Dulles
Conceiving, launching and growing a new service or product is a major challenge. With our world becoming more
and more complex each day, this creates incredible pressures and traps for the unwary. The needs of organizational
leaders have grown exponentially in managing, marketing, staffing, finance, technology support, risk management,
and regulatory compliance. Even with a bevy of professional attorneys, accountants, human resources specialists, and
others at your side, it is simply impossible for one, two, or even three individuals to adequately address all
these needs and still focus on building a business. Many early stage and small organizations can neither afford nor
justify the cost of accessing professional advice until it's time to put out a very large fire.
Our specialists bring a high-level of expertise across a number of critical business functions to your organization.
We are not, however, a replacement for your professional team. Instead, we draw upon our knowledge and experience
to help your company become aware of and plan for addressing the critical requirements of operating a
business in today's world. In the process of helping you choreograph a long-term, strategic program, we may fill
a specialized role on a temporary basis. This is usually driven by a conscious balancing of your strategic objectives
against available time and resources. At all times, however, the individual(s) assigned to your organization
never varies, providing a level of consistency and understanding of your business other "temporary" services
simply can't match.
jack speranza
principal / operations & technology
Jack has over 20 years of experience providing senior operational, technology, and legal services to a wide
variety of businesses and non-profit organizations. More significantly, as a co-founder of 3 start-up ventures
(and 1 non-profit organization), he is especially attuned to the challenges and opportunities associated with
launching new operations. He brings this experience to bear for every client with whom he works.
In addition to managing the ongoing business operations for Main Street Ventures and its related entities, Jack
serves on the Board of Directors for his local Chamber of Commerce and a Community Endowment. Some of his recent
client engagements include:
- Angel Funded New Media & Entertainment Start-up: Jack worked within the framework of the
founder's original concept to develop multi-level revenue models within a strategic business plan.
He helped recruit the initial leadership team, established the company's complete operational
structure, architected a prototype web application / communications platform that streamlined and
integrated key service delivery functions, and oversaw its development by managing both on-shore
and off-shore development teams.
- International Law Firm - Mergers & Acquisitions Group: Jack undertook a limited engagement with one of the
nation's leading law firms in the LBO / Private Equity arena, assisting their IT department with architecting
a proprietary Knowledge Management system. Once implemented, this new system would strategically leverage the
time-sensitive nature of the firm's extensive institutional knowledge and expertise across geographically
diverse operations. The system was also projected to immediately serve as an additional revenue generating tool,
more than paying for its own cost of development and maintenance;
- Privately Held Specialty Food Manufacturer: Jack worked with the owners of this 10-year old family business
to shift efforts from the running of daily operations to actively managing and their business and planning
for a major expansion. In evaluating the same key factors as outside investors, a number of critical
conditions were identified and addressed (the most notable of which included serious product pricing
miscalculations). Jack developed new product pricing calculators that more accurately accounted for
fixed and variable costs. He also prepared a blueprint for and completed the preliminary stages of
converting the company's customer ordering, invoicing, inventory control, and manufacturing operations
from separate manual processes to a more integrated, semi-automatic operation utilizing the company's installed
technology base;
- Charitable Foundation: As one of eight Board members for a local community endowment, Jack has worked with
his fellow Directors to re-vitalize a 10-year old organization that had lain dormant for several years.
In four years, the organization has instituted more formalized management and controls, hired its first
Executive Director in June 2008, and more than tripled endowment assets;
- Privately Held Real Estate Development Company: Long before the local real estate market begain its tumble,
Jack worked with the owner of this company to develop alternative operational plans designed to reduce
sales costs and leverage marketing efficiencies across the owner's several related business entities.
In addition to assessing operations, Jack evaluated a number of business and legal risks associated with
the alternatives included in his plan.
